Ostia, Fiumicino, and Maccarese: in the late 1800s they were marshy lands, battered by malaria and left in the wild by the papal court and the great tenants of the time. The Tiber delta, however, needed to be reclaimed.
Who would carry out such an undertaking? The laborers and peasants who had transformed the muddy soil of Romagna into lush orchards with their own hands during the 19th century, stemming the power of the waters with spades and wheelbarrows.
They were revolutionary socialists, anarchists and republicans.
