ENDLESS HADRIAN

Endless Hadrian is a long-term photography project aimed at retracing the journeys undertaken by Emperor Hadrian.

The project seeks to create a photographic atlas of Hadrian’s empire, exploring how it has transformed over time. By establishing a dialogue between past and present, the project aims to capture the traces of history alongside elements of the contemporary world. Rather than isolating history or suspending it in time, the goal is to provide context to what remains of the ancient world.

Almost two millennia have passed since Hadrian—traveling by boat, on horseback, or even on foot—journeyed across his vast empire. Place names have changed, populations have shifted, cultures have blended, and even geography has been reshaped. Yet, despite these transformations, that ancient world still feels familiar. While names like Numidia, Dacia, and Pannonia may now sound distant, their histories remain visible and relevant today.

By shifting perspectives, Endless Hadrian seeks to interpret the contemporary world through the vestiges of the Roman Empire. In this way, the emperor serves as a narrative thread, guiding us to uncover the complexity of modern reality. Through the preservation of archaeological heritage, the project seeks to explain and contextualize the current state of the countries that once formed Hadrian’s world.
