FOOD AND EXPLOITATION: MADE IN LOMBARDY

Lombardy, with an agro-industrial production valued at over 14 billion euros, is Italy’s leading region in the agri-food sector. However, it is also one of the regions most affected by legal proceedings related to caporalato (illegal labor exploitation).

Three agri-food supply chains are described through dozens of interviews with various operators and thousands of kilometers traveled across the provinces of Mantova, Brescia, Bergamo, and Cremona.

In Lombardy, exploitation has evolved into more sophisticated forms that manage to evade oversight: cooperatives, grueling shifts, bogus contracts, and “grey” labor are all characteristics of an increasingly unjust supply chain
